The Portal is Open!
The Portal is now open!
After months of hard work, our new multi-million pound visitor centre, the Portal, is now open to the public!
The Portal houses our new purpose built learning suite and function room, an interactive exhibition (The Biffa Award Gallery), a large gift shop stocking locally made gifts and canal ware, and our new licenced restaurant, The Gongoozler.
The centre has been built with funding from the European Regional Development Fund, Heritage Lottery Fund, Biffa Award and the Black Country Local Enterprise Partnership.
We’re already busy…
Hundreds of school children will soon be passing through our doors in our opening month, as the Portal’s new learning suite is already booked up for school visits. Staff are busy preparing to deliver engaging workshop sessions that explore the everyday lives of the people who lived and worked on the canals during their hay day, and the important role that the Black Country played during the Industrial Revolution. The workshops are funded by the European Regional Development Fund and the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Posh Black Country Nosh
Our new licenced restaurant, The Gongoozler (a word that means to sit on the canal side, idly watching the world go by) is also open for business, with a menu that features ‘posh’ Black Country style nosh, and a large selection of delicious cakes and desserts. The restaurant will be a particularly lovely place to eat in the spring and summer months with its spacious balcony overlooking the canal below. The Gongoozler is open 10am til 10pm, for breakfasts, lunch, evening meals and light bites.
If you would like to take a look around the new centre for yourself (and of course, go on a boat trip), the exhibition gallery and shop are free to enter, and are open between 10 and 5pm, 7 days a week. To book a table at the restaurant (although you can just drop in during the day) please call 0121 557 6265.
