The Dudley Tunnel Trip
Travel the complete Dudley tunnel
This tour gives you the opportunity to travel the full 2888m length of the mighty Dudley Tunnel. You’ll get the chance to experience the traditional art of ‘legging’, where boats were propelled through the tunnels using leg power.
It also includes a comprehensive tour of the remarkable Limestone Mines and Caverns taking in all the elements featured in our 45 minute trips, including:
– an entertaining video show in Little Tess Cavern explaining how the limestone was originally formed and emerged from the earth’s crust
– fascinating details about how the fossilised remains of small creatures and plants which are now clearly visible in Castle Mill’s coral reef once lay under the sea bed
– reconstructions in Hurst Cavern with mannequins depicting how miners worked in the tunnels during the 18th century
– an astonishing music and light show in the Singing Cavern
This trip lasts about 2 hours and runs once or twice a month on a Sunday, from March to October. See the calendar to the right for upcoming dates.
Your journey starts at the Portal building on the Birmingham New Road, where you depart by coach to be taken to the other end of the Dudley Tunnel. There you meet your boat and your journey back through the Tunnel begins. At certain times this may be the other way round, so please call to check if you wish to know.
If a visitor requires another person as their essential carer to support them and enable them to access the canal trips, then this person is admitted for half price for our longer boat trips and special events. Please bring along either your carer’s network card or your PIP cover letter as carer identification. If you have any questions about our carer rates, please get in touch with us.
We regret that no dogs except guide dogs are allowed on site.
Tickets booked online will arrive by email and will not be posted out.
