Lifelong Learning Programme 2018 Launch

We are very pleased to announce a new programme of lifelong learning at the Portal for 2018!

Meet talented local artists and craftspeople, learn new skills, and share your thirst for new experiences with like-minded people.

All our workshops will be beginner friendly so we can all have a go at something new!

We are very lucky to welcome back Mary Coleman from the Lace Guild, Stourbridge for our first workshop of the year.

On Tuesday 16th January from 1pm-4pm, you can join Mary in her workshop to learn the art of Bobbin Lace Making and make your own piece to take home! Bobbin Lace Making is a form of weaving worked on a pillow. Mary will guide students through the basic moves that make up the ‘stitches’ in order to complete a first piece of lace.

At the start of the month, Mary came to Chit Chat club to talk about The History of Lace Making and we all had the chance to get hands-on and have a go at Bobbin Lace Making. Below you can see some of the samples that Mary brought along and the petals that we made thanks to Mary’s expert guidance! It was so interesting to learn about the different styles and techniques through history and the rich tradition of craftsmanship in this country. To learn more about the Lace Guild take a look on their website Don’t forget to follow them on Twitter to see some beautiful lace creations! @TheLaceGuild

If Mary’s talk whetted your appetite for more Lace Making, or if you missed out last time, make sure you book your place onto her workshop this January. Mary’s workshop will take place in our learning room at the Portal visitor centre.

This half day workshop will cost £50 per person and can be booked on our website or telephone 0121 557 6265.
